Internet of things framework in UAE

internet of things

what is the internet of things?

Internet of Things also known as IoT refers to a growing network of interlinking devices that are connected to the internet, including different devices such as home electrical appliances, computer devices, digital machines, vehicles, vending machines, and other physical objects that have a unique identifier. These devices can send data through a network with little human intervention. Using IoT has a great effect on our lives and has positive features. for example smart homes with significant security systems created through IoT solutions. everything in a smart home like light, fan, the house temperature, or security system can be controlled via smartphones remotely.

One of the most important and great features of using IoT solutions is conserving energy and therefore reducing electric bills. Also by creating new services, increasing production, and offering new solutions to common problems, it makes a great evolution in the industries.it has been grown in recent years and has great benefits for several aspects of the societies like entities of consumers, governments, and ecosystems. Major changes in technology, economic and environmental sections make it more interesting to have a smart city

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is known as a pioneering country that uses innovative technologies in building smart cities that are combined with an in-depth analysis of global best practices. so UAE reviews and analyzes all city services and infrastructure to understand capabilities and opportunities for employment smart city innovations. Its aim is to create the world’s most advanced Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem in the world’s smartest city to enhance people’s lives.

This strategy seeks to secure Dubai’s digital wealth and persuades organization departments to connect the emirate’s smart transformation and gain the goals of the Smart Dubai Plan 2021 to have a government that is 100 percent paperless. There are six strategic domains to cover include: governance, management, acceleration, deployment, monetization, and security.

Framework of IoT

In the world of information where a huge amount of data is being generated and transferred through a number of devices, there is a need for a specific point where everything is collected and combined. such a specific point is an essential requirement in the network to integrate the data and Facilitate access to these data. so the data can be transferred and generated smoothly. It is defined as an ecosystem that is composed of several connected devices that communicate with each other, over the Internet. This IoT framework facilitates the smooth interaction and communication of connected devices.it also can be used in the designing of various physical objects including thermostats, electrical devices, security and alarm systems, vending machines, among many other objects.

Major  Components of the Internet of Things Framework

The IoT Framework consists of four major components:

  • Device Hardware]
  • Device Software
  • Communication and Cloud Platform
  • Cloud Application

Purpose of the IoT Framework

the main goals of the IoT framework are as the following:

  • provide secure IoT service
  • meet all reasonable demands for IoT services
  • supporting ongoing innovation
  • manage scarce resources efficiently
  • protect the rights and interests of users of IoT
  • provide clarity for IoT market development

What does the IoT Framework apply to?

As said before iot is a worldwide foundation for the information society that made possible the interconnecting of the development services by existing and advancing data and communication technologies. The IoT Framework sets up the provision of ‘IoT Services’ which include any functions or facilities including IoT-related services or solutions for users that are in the UAE. These IoT services do not apply for IoT-specific Connectivity that includes the transmission, receiving, broadcasting, or switching of IoT-related data via a telecommunications network.

Who does the IoT Framework apply to?

The outlook of the IoT Framework is wide and utilized for all people that involve and use IoT within the UAE, that can be as the following:

  • telecommunications service providers
  • IoT Service Providers
  • users of IoT Services (for example individuals, businesses, and government).

An IoT Service Provider can be defined as any person or business that gives IoT services within the UAE, although it includes IoT network provider platforms (e.g. Salesforce IoT Cloud) and machine-to-machine connectivity providers but not restricted to them. One of the interesting points about the IoT framework is that it is an extraterritorial application that can be said to be prohibited if any person or organization whose operation or location is outside the UAE provides remote IoT services for its customers. if such a person or organization aims to be an IoT service provider must meet the following rules:

  • must be present in the UAE that can be onshore or in one of the free zones and
  •  make an official representative in the UAE who will be responsible for all communications with TRA and UAE law enforcement agencies.

Suppliers of IoT services  within the UAE are prescribed to act based on the following Items:

  • review and analyze their operation and make certain that is in correspondence with the IoT framework
  • Familiarity and knowledge of registration requirements set out in the IoT Procedures and check if any activity Leads to any registration or licensing obligations.
  • And finally, remember that the IoT Framework is likely to be just one of a number of similar policies that aim to create a ‘smarter’ and more connected region.
